The Schipperke is a breed that originated in Belgiam and their name is thought to mean "little captain" (like, little skipper) or "little shepherd." They are also known as "spitzke" or Belgian Barge Dogs. At one time they were mistaken for Keeshonden (Dutch Barge Dogs.)
